Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of the year. Release date, compatible consoles, boxed version versus digital code, whether the PS5 Pro is worth it: here is what you need to know before you pre-order.
Release date: 19 November 2026
Rockstar Games has set GTA VI’s release for 19 November 2026. The date has been confirmed by publisher Take-Two and repeated in the launch trailer in mid-October. The game will be available on the same day on every compatible console.
Which consoles can you play GTA 6 on?
GTA VI is coming only to PlayStation 5 (Standard, Digital and Pro) and Xbox Series X and Series S. It is not planned for PS4 or Xbox One, and no PC version has been announced yet. If you are still on a previous-generation console, you will need to upgrade.
Boxed version or digital code: which should you choose?
Like several big recent releases, the official boxed version of GTA VI does not contain a disc: inside is a download code. Either way, you download the game to your console.
- Box with code: a nice item to give as a gift or keep in your collection.
- Digital code: sent by email, nothing to wait for in the post.
Good news: both formats also work on the PS5 Digital Edition, which has no disc drive. Just make sure you have a good connection and enough free space on your console, as the game will be large.
Do you need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
No: GTA VI runs on every PS5. The PS5 Pro generally delivers sharper, smoother visuals in games that support it, thanks to its more powerful GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR technology. Rockstar has not yet detailed any PS5 Pro-specific enhancements for GTA VI.
If you were planning to upgrade, now is a good time: at Geniumos, the PS5 Pro 2 TB comes with GTA VI in the format of your choice (boxed code or digital code), reserved and delivered when the game is released.
